As an initiative of the recently formed ASMS Diversity and Outreach Working Group, the editors are pleased to introduce a new “Faces of Mass Spectrometry” interview series in the Journal of the American Society of Mass Spectrometry. The goal of this series is to highlight the diversity of ASMS members, as well as to demonstrate the various paths that one can undertake to achieve a career in mass spectrometry. An animated conversation with Diversity and Outreach Working Group member Dr. Livia Eberlin introduced science writer Kristin Phillips to the astounding capability of mass spectrometry and sparked this series of conversations with innovative, creative scientists of ASMS. Phillips, a Science and Health writer at the University of Texas at Austin, lives to discover new worlds both in her own research observing primate social relationships and by interviewing hundreds of climate scientists, archaeologists, paleontologists and nutritionists.
