2016 Asilomar Conference

The 32nd Asilomar Conference on Mass Spectrometry, organized by Daniel Austin (Brigham Young University) and Zheng Ouyang (Purdue University), was held on October 14-18, 2016 at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, CA. The topic of the conference was “Novel Instrumentation in Mass Spectrometry and Ion Mobility”. Approximately 115 researchers attended. There were 27 invited lectures, 6 “hot topic” talks, 24 rapid 120-second poster highlight summaries, and 41 poster presentations. Some traditions of the conference were maintained, including the timekeeping by monkey Po-Po and “cutting of the necktie”, which led to the chasing of the speaker by the session chair before the final presentation. For those attendees who have previously been to the Asilomar meeting with a memory of pleasant weather and ocean breezes, this time the Pacific Ocean really showed another side of its temper with heavy rains, gusty winds and high waves.
