Eligibility
Applicants must have been ASMS members for at least 10 years and demonstrate a strong interest in the history of mass spectrometry and the Society. Ideal candidates will also have a talent for creating educational materials that preserve and share this history.
Term
The selected applicant will serve as Archivist/Historian-Elect from January 1 to December 31, 2026, working alongside the current Archivist/Historian for a one-year transition. This will be followed by a five-year term from 2027 through 2031.
Responsibilities
- Chair the History Committee and actively engage members in ongoing and new projects
- Organize regular virtual meetings of the History Committee
- Create new “History Posters” as authorized by the ASMS Board
- Serve as an active ASMS liaison to the Science History Institute (SHI), where ASMS is an affiliate
- Conduct oral history interviews, in conjunction with SHI, as directed by the ASMS Board
- Develop new JASMS Perspective features highlighting prominent ASMS members
- Work with VP for Programs on oral sessions with history focus every few years
- Work with members on the transfer of their conference photo archives to the Society
- Coordinate selection of future historic instrument display hosts
- Provide written status reports to the ASMS Board for its August and January meetings
Compensation
- While this is a volunteer role, ASMS will cover the following expenses:
- Complimentary registration and up to six hotel nights for the ASMS annual conference
- One annual trip to the SHI in Philadelphia
- Professional design and production of historical materials, including posters
