Gavin Reid
Michigan State University

Andy Tao
Purdue University

Gavin Reid is Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University.  1987-1997 he worked as a Research Assistant in the Joint Protein Sequencing Laboratory at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Melbourne, Australia, while studying part time to obtain an Associate Diploma in Applied Science.  He obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Science in 1997 and a PhD in Chemistry in 2000 from the University of Melbourne, under the joint supervision of Richard O’Hair and Richard Simpson.  From 2000-2002, he carried out post-doctoral research with Scott McLuckey at Purdue University, then became an Assistant Member at the Ludwig Institute, prior to moving to Michigan State where is currently Associate Professor.

Dr. Reid has over 20 years experience in the development and application of fundamental and applied chemical and bio-analytical mass spectrometry methods and instrumentation for proteome and lipidome analysis.  To date, this work has resulted in 125 peer-reviewed publications, 3 patents and presentations at 65 national and international conferences.

As a member of ASMS since 1999, Dr. Reid has served as coordinator of the Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry (2007-2008) and Peptide Fragmentation (2010-2011) Interest Groups. He was an instructor for the annual Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry Short Course (2008-2010) and was a member of the ASMS annual conference program review committee (2010-2011). He has served as a session chair at multiple ASMS conferences and other national and international meetings, and is currently a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry and the European Journal of Mass Spectrometry.  Dr. Reid co-chaired the Midwestern Universities Analytical Chemistry Conference held at MSU in 2009, and was chair of the Michigan Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group (2006-2010).  He was chair of the ACS local section at Michigan State University (2007-2009), and is currently faculty coordinator of the monthly ACS local section K-12 Chemistry Teacher Support Group.

W. Andy Tao received his mass spectrometry training through his dissertation work on gas-phase chiral analysis in the Aston Lab at Purdue University with R. Graham Cooks.  After receiving his Ph.D. in December 2001, he worked for three years as a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle Drs. Leroy Hood and Ruedi Aebersold.  He started his own research group in the Department of Biochemistry at Purdue University in 2005, and currently is Associate Professor.  He also has courtesy appointments in the Department of Chemistry, Department of Medicinal Chemistry & Molecular Pharmacology, and Purdue Center for Cancer Research.

Tao leads an active research group focusing on new developments in mass spectrometry-based proteomics. In particular, the Tao group has introduced multi-functionalized soluble nanopolymers as a platform for the study of molecular signaling and for the identification of intracellular drug targets. Current applications include the identification of direct kinase substrates and multiplex assay of protein phosphorylation. Tao has co-authored over 60 research articles, invited reviews, and book chapters. He received NSF Career Award in 2007 and was the recipient for 2006 ASMS research award.

Dr. Tao has served on the ASMS Education Committee since 2010 and on the ASMS conference program review committee in 2009 and 2010.
